Hi Habitaters!
Thanks to your dedication to our organization, we've had a great semester so far!
Two weeks ago, UGA Habitat for Humanity's 9th home in the Athens area was dedicated! We are now well on our way toward obtaining the $32,000 needed for the half-sponsorship of our 10th house in the Athens community!
This past weekend, we: earned $210 from donations in Tate Plaza prior to the Auburn game kickoff; sold $213 worth of pancakes at November's Pancake Dinner; recycled cans around campus collected from the Auburn game; and brought in 200 runners and $1,500 in sponsorships for the 8th Annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk! In addition to these events, we have successfully completed our second mailout and hope to receive donations from students, alumni, parents, and patrons of UGA Habitat!
After completing an intense selection process administered by the Youth Programs Department at Habitat International, UGA Habitat for Humanity has been selected as one of the 2007-2008 State Farm $10,000 Matching Grant recipients. We are thrilled to have been chosen as a grant recipient and cannot give enough thanks to State Farm for their generous donation in helping us meet our goal in continuing to provide decent and affordable shelter in the Athens community!
We have also planned many events this semester, including Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week @ UGA! Twelve organizations around campus (AIDS Walk/Run Athens, Campus Christian Fellowship, Dawgs for Israel, MANRRS, Myers Community Council, Presbyterian Student Center, Roosevelt@UGA, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc, Students for Environmental Awareness, Tate Society, UGA Habitat for Humanity, and the UGA Progressives) have joined together to advocate against hunger and homelessness in Athens and worldwide. For more information about Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, visit http://www.nationalhomeless.org/aboutnch. For more information about poverty in Athens, visit OneAthens at www.prosperousathens.org. For more information about the events throughout the week, look for a complete list on our homepage!
The semester hasn't finished yet, though! We still have our largest fundraiser of the year - Giftwrapping Across Georgia - from Dec. 15 - 24 at Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Best Buy stores around the state! Hundreds of volunteers are needed at stores for this to be a successful fundraiser, in addition to our donors to come to Borders, Barnes & Noble, and/or Best Buy (Alpharetta only) stores across the state and have their gifts wrapped! We hope to raise $12,000 through this fundraiser - the amount of money needed to meet our goal of building our 10th home in the Athens area. Please email Farrah Keong, Special Projects Chair, at fmk13@uga.edu if you are interested in volunteering, would like more information about this fundraiser, or would like to find a store that we're working at near you!
Thank you for your continued support of UGA Habitat for Humanity! Because of the support and work of our members and patrons, we are able to continue to be one of the strongest student organizations at UGA and one of the strongest Habitat campus chapters in the world! As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please email uga.habitat.pres@gmail.com.
